A Clean, Well-Lighted Place Essay example -- Literary Analysis, Ernest

â€Å" A Clean, Well-Lighted Place† by Ernest Hemingway is an oversimplified short story wherein he portrays a scene in a Cafe, where the principle characters are two servers and an elderly person. In the story, Hemingway scarcely made a foundation for his characters, yet this was a piece of his moderate composing style. He needed to make a story that was direct to the peruser, and in which the peruser could without much of a stretch comprehend his mentality. His motivation for composing the story was to uncover his sentiments on society, legislative issues, and the person at that point. These emotions could be portrayed by three primary words: urgency, thwarted expectation, and forlornness. Through the entirety of the characters in his story, the peruser had the option to acquire one of these emotions. Notwithstanding, when I read the story I needed to find out about the characters to have the option to build up an association with them. I needed to know how and for what reas on did every one of them gained those sentiments? Subsequently, I chose to change the perspective of the story from third-individual restricted to first-individual. In contrast to Hemingway, I included progressively close to home insights regarding one of the fundamental characters, for this situation the elderly person, whom I consider to be the most strange character of the three. Thusly, I could cause the peruser to relate more to the feelings passed on by the story. Subsequently, by demonstrating the peruser the elderly person's experience, I made Hemingway's disposition of his unique story more grounded, and furthermore build up an association between the peruser and the character(s). Be that as it may, I likewise needed to alter a portion of the plot, and language to make my scene intelligible and applicable to my perspective. The most exceptional change I made to Hemingway’s short story was the difference in perspective from third-individual constrained to first - per... ... When I originally read â€Å"A Clean, Well-Lighted Place† by Ernest Hemingway, I believed that I did not have an association with the story. I didn't feel like I knew the characters, which left me with no association with them and charmed me also, particularly the elderly person. For what reason did Hemingway forget about foundations to his characters? This inspired me to compose my scene through the elderly person's perspective. I felt that with the difference in perspective to first-individual, the peruser would feel more pulled in to the story, and simultaneously I could keep Hemingway’s mentality of gloom and bafflement flawless, perhaps make it more grounded. With my piece of the riddle, I felt more content with his unique story, and I had the option to set up a connection between Hemingway (as an author) and me (as a peruser). I had the option to encounter his inspiration for composing â€Å"A Clean, Well-Lighted Place†.

Spring Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Spring - Assignment Example The subjects that spring up in the brain, while tuning in to this piece, can be connected together to shape a nonexistent adventure. The music revives the brain with showy hues and a vivacious climate. It populates our creative mind with things that are related with the positive recollections of lives. The ensemble begins with a delightful arrangement of violins which emits a great deal of young vitality. It invokes a picture of a youngster in the glades. The overcast climate and cool wind is dazzling the consideration of this individual. The individual has nothing at the forefront of his thoughts separated from the atmosphere encompassing him. His past and future are past him at that point. The present is just what concerns him. He has no clue where he originated from and where he will go. Two minutes into the orchestra, an odd unsettling influence appears to move toward that individual. Maybe a few people are tailing him for something that he isn't even mindful of. He astutely escapes from the difficulty and attempts to make sense of why he was being pursued. He at that point appreciates a delicate feast out in the open. This entire thought accentuates the transient idea of dim intervals in our lives. Whatever the account of this character might be, he just can't relinquish the excellence that encompasses him. The music doesn't educate much regarding the individual however it gives a trace of imperial touch to the character of the individual. It seems as though he left the regal life and every one of its wealth to carry on with the life of a typical man and simply have the option to feel the blood spouting trough his veins. The music advises us that life originates from nature and that there is nothing more lovely than nature. Issues will travel every which way yet on e can't neglect to watch and value the magnificence and virtue of nature in such a case that he overlooks than maybe nature will neglect to do the equivalent as well. The music delineates that such euphoria can come in the wake of submitting an honorable demonstration regardless of whether it pushes us into difficulty so our hero could have submitted such a demonstration. That would clarify the

Flashback 1.0

Flashback 1.0 So, a few weeks ago, Matt gave me an excellent idea for content: recycling! So, welcome to Flashback: Part 1, where my older and wiser senior self will laugh herself silly over my less wise freshman self. So, who am I? Im Laura, and in my first entry ever, I introduced myself to the blogosphere. (I still really like that entry, its definitely worth a read if youve got the time.) What did prefrosh Laura think shed major in? When I do get to MIT, Im planning to declare Course 2 (Mechanical Engineering) as a major and possibly minor in Course 17 (Political Science). Interesting. I got the major right, but probably on accident. Also, unless something changes drastically (again), Ill graduate without taking a single political science class. But, if you think about my sudden realization that I want to work in International Development, everything comes full circle. If youre a prospective student and youre thinking, Man, I wish I could do some of those things MIT kids do, it seems like so much fun. But I dont know the first thing about it, so I guess I wont apply- STOP. Good advice then, and good advice now. I am here, ready and willing to be the poster child for people who get headaches listening to conversations at MIT but still love every minute of it. Huh. This is really interesting, because I remember writing it, and really meaning it. But I have really transformed into the type of person who leads those headache-inducing conversations. I really remember being so overwhelmed by MIT, and how smart those kids were, and how much more they knew than I did aboutwell, basically everything- computers, science, the WORLD, whatever. Well, the dirty little secret is, freshmen are all dumb. What I mean is, people start on a pretty level playing field. Even people who have some crazy experience thats totally outside your realm of comprehension, theyre gonna fail some tests too. Years later, most of these dumb freshmen have transformed into those crazy intimidating MIT students. I guess what Im getting at here is this: the point of college is to become educated. And in some ways, MIT does an awesome job of that (yes, some, not all)so being intimidated because you dont think you know anything is really silly. Thats the point. If you knew every thing, why would you go to college? My prefrosh blogger self was a little strained for topics, seeing as how she was writing before even showing up at MIT. (This was well before being an admissions blogger was cool, so there was no super competitive blogger selection process, which is how you all ended up with me.) So I wrote about the summer housing lottery. So I filled out the Freshman Housing Lottery like this: I tied Baker and Burton-Conner for first and listed New House as my third choice. After that I barely even remember. I know Id be happy in any of those 3, so itll all work out okay. HA! Ahahahaha. This is priceless. Let me let you in a little secret: my summer housing lottery preferences were COMPLETELY WRONG. I forget the exact order of my preferences after that, but I believe Random came in around 5, right before or after Simmons, and East Campus made its appearance around number 9. WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG. I mean, for me, obviously. I fell into the same trap as nearly every prefrosh ever, so hopefully enough people will read this and believe me, as someone who got it wrong and then spent 2 years as REX chair trying to convince others not to make the same mistake: Burton Conner IS NOT Baker. I mean, not even close. I would not have been happy at Baker. Matt lived there happily for 4 years, and Ive heard its a cool place and all, but just.no. I got to campus and realized that I thought East Campus might actually be cool. Which really confused me, because I was terrified of it before arriving. I was suddenly torn. Stay in BC, or request a transfer to EC? I even trudged across Mass Ave in a torrential downpour to ask the poor, exhausted deskworker for a tour. I asked a upperclassman BC resident who was on the waiting list to move to EC for his advice. I agonized over the decision, and finally confirmed my assignment to Burton Conner. 3 years later, I still dont know if that was the right thing to do. If I were to do it all over again as a prefrosh, knowing what I know now, my preferences might look something more like: 1. East Campus/Burton Conner 3. Random 4. Bexley 5. New 10. Baker What is the moral of this story? For the love of the Almighty- DO REX! The next step was to upload [the banner for my blog back in the day before mitadmissions.org]. Any images we bloggers post here need to be hosted in our Athena lockers. All MIT students get Athena accounts, which allow you to have your @mit.edu email as well as some server space with MIT. This space is known as your Athena locker. So Ben sent me a link with info about how to upload to this Athena locker, only Ben is a crazy Mac user and my parents (who buy the computers we use) would be so totally confused by the concept of a different kind of OS that they always stick to Windows. So Bens help didnt really work. So after searching unsuccessfully for similar info about Windows, I stumbled across this program called Filezilla, which supposedly allows you to upload files securely. So I downloaded it and started trying it out. I had no instructions, but I figured hey, I got into MIT, how hard can it be? I totally know what FTP is (file transfer protocol) and I think I might have used it once before, so lets see what I can come up with. Well, after hours of hard work and blundering around without a clue as to what I was doing, I finally. gave up and hosted the image on http://photobucket.com/ .. Then I came back to my dorm to try to set up my Internet connection I had removed my ethernetthing to put in my wireless card, and the computer got mad at me for that. It kept crashing as soon as I turned it on. After playing with it for awhile, I finally managed to get to the point where the wireless card detected a signal. From there it was only a matter of entering my Athena usernname and password and You guys, Im so, so proud of myself right now. It was probably the simplest thing I ever had to do on a computer but hey! It worked! Im excited! I can use the Internet now! Awww. I was so scared of computers! I had never used anything more complicated than Powerpoint, which I taught myself in my 7th grade computer applications class. Within 10 months of those blog entries, Id been hired by MITs Information Services and Technology Computing Help Desk. I still work there, and its actually turning out to be the activity at MIT that Ive stuck with the longest. Every time I work, I answer a whole range of phone calls- everything from people who should never be allowed to own computers right through clients who work as the tech support of their lab who have run into a trickier problem than theyre capable of dealing with. I wont say that I answer all of these calls with the utmost amount of grace and intelligence, but I do well enough. Incredible, when you consider how puzzled I was by connecting my computer to the wireless network the first day that I arrived on campus. Now when I answer the phone at IST, I silently pray that the person on the other end of th e line says, I cant get my computer to connect to the Internet, because I know I can likely resolve that within 5 minutes. We excited prefrosh also received the results of the HASS-D lottery. I was lucky enough to be assigned my first choice class here too- 21F.716 (Introduction to Contemporary Hispanic Literature). Let me just say that I really have no problem with this concept where everyone refers to classes by their numbers, Ive even got some of them figured out already. But 21F.716 is way too much for me. How do you even say that out loud? Isnt it just much easier to call it Spanish Lit or something? Really now. Anyway, I made a stop at Barnes and Noble yesterday and picked up a new Spanish-English dictionary and now Im fully ready to take some Spanish at MIT. Im not sure if Ill have to meet with the professor to prove my proficiency at Spanish, so well see how that goes. Maybe my AP Spanish score will count. Aw, another cute one. Butbuteverything is numbered?! Yes, Naive Prefroshling, everything is numbered. Get used to it. Also, when I asked the Spanish professor how to prove my proficiency in Spanish, she basically told me in so many words, Youre a big kid now. You know if you can handle the class, not me. If you want to sign up for something that you know is over your head, thats your problem. I took the class, was one of 3 non-native Spanish speakers, and got an A-. (Hidden grade, of course.) Im getting a little tired of every single person I run into at Bed, Bath and Beyond asking me if Im excited about school. No offense to all the adults out there, but that one definitely ranks at the top of the list of Lamest and Most Annoying Questions Ever. Just a heads up. HA! This one made me burst out laughing when I reread it, because it reminded me of reading blogger applications. While you all had highly engaging blogs and everything, I think I read about 15 trips to Bed, Bath, and Beyond (which took me back to fond memories of my own trip to the same in my hometown) and I swore I would strangle someone the next time I heard the words the next four years of my life. Also, its interesting because So, are you excited about graduating? What are you going to do with the rest of your life? is now officially the new most annoying question ever. This trip down memory lane brings me tomy first day of classes at MIT. Seriously. I was prolific back in the day. I probably even rivaled Snively in terms of blogging frequency. Dont believe me? Go check out the archives. To be fair, my entries were all pretty short, and theyve gotten a lot longer over time. In any case, this still leaves me with quite a bit of material left to reminisce over from freshman year, so look forward to similar entries in the future. Apparently I used to end every entry with Have a nice day. I also used to say 09er instead of just 09. Its actually really annoying to read. Would it be wrong of me to go back and change those entries? And P.S., I had really long hair! Heres a photo of me posing with Susan Hockfield during Orientation of freshman year: My hair has been getting progressively shorter since then. In fact, I got a haircut just a few days ago, and decided to show off both my new style and my civic responsibility by posing with my completed, sealed, and stamped absentee ballot: So thats your friendly reminder to register to vote or request your absentee ballot, as appropriate. Deadlines are quickly approaching! Responses to comments: A few weeks ago I wrote long and detailed responses to about a million comments, and then my computer crashed and I lost them all. Apparently I havent learned the cardinal rule of computers despite my progress: always save your work! Heres attempt number 2, Im sorry its so late! Claire said: mattress alarm clock = clock that vibrates the mattress at a specified time, really useful for deaf and blind people. Ha! Actually, its an alarm clock that flips your mattress upside down and throws you out of bed. I think the idea has merit, but my 2.009 group is currently going in a different direction Oasis 11 said: A good entry into ID is doing Peace Corps after you graduate. =) At the time of your comment, my application to the Peace Corps was about 3/4 complete. Ive since submitted it, and have scheduled my interview for next week- so wish me luck! RobotGrrl said: Robotics is more than designing vacuums. Its mainly about research and innovation- which makes it way more fun than what you mentioned! For instance, ever since the Dartmouth Conference about AI in 1957, weve been trying to create something that has a general AI. We assumed it would be incredibly easy, when it actually isnt. The amount of thought that has to go in to programming something how to perceive its surroundings is astonishing! . My point being, the future of robots just isnt in household maintenance. Its in interaction between the robot, its environment, and humans. Maybe you just were introduced to the wrong view of robotics. ^_^ Okay, dont get me wrong, I know robots are awesome. I just cant see myself working on them for the rest of my life. I think its kind of silly that we spent millions of dollars in research into things like AI when we still havent figured out how to feed all of the hungry people in the world. Trust me, when I showed up at the Career Fair a few weeks ago, I couldnt help myself- I handed a copy of my resume to NASA, because theres still that small part of me thats sad to be turning away from my dream of designing Mars rovers. But, I ultimately think Im doing the right thing for me right now. John Wong said: As a older person living beyond school I have an independent perspective on this. I think your primary passion was Spanish, yet somehow you ended up as a science/engineering major. I think you let other people influenced your career decision. However its never too late to do things on your own. With all due respect, not so much. =) I mean, sure, I sort of turned my back on things Ive been interested in, and probably too muchbut thats not to say that Im not into engineering. Also, majoring in Spanish? No way. I could never do it. Just like I could never be just an engineer. Im off to grab some food, head to a 2.009 meeting, and then pack for a spontaneous 24 hour trip back to the greatest state ever.

The Male Sex Is Portrayed As More Valuable Than Female Sex

Throughout American history and culture, the male sex is portrayed as more valuable than the female sex. In other words, superior. When you look at the greatest influential leaders, entrepreneurs, politicians, musicians; most of them are men. When you look at the workplace, almost every industry is dominated by males. Sports is also a field mostly dominated by men. The question is why? Many people believe it is because males are physically, mentally, and emotionally more powerful than females which make them more superior. However, many feminists argue that women are superior to men but they never had enough time to prove it. The physical and psychological differences between the two sexes formed two different social roles. However, gender socialization and stereotypes prevented American women from being able to prove of being equal to men if not better. It was natural that masculine power and domination established itself in these new forms of society. Men are physically and psychologically more aggressive than women which is why since the beginning of time males were the dominant sex. When it comes to physicality, men are generally stronger than women. According to AZ Central Magazine, males have approximately 40% muscle mass and women have approximately 30%. The magazine also states that most of the man’s muscle mass is distributed to the upper body while most of the woman’s muscle mass is in the lower body. This means that since the beginning of humanity, men were moreShow MoreRelatedHysteria, Not Only Oppressed Female Social Upliftment1566 Words   |  7 PagesDuring the 19th century, Hysteria, not only oppressed female social upliftment but it, led to a misconception of the sexual health of females. 2nd Amendment Paper Free Essays

When I think about the dreams of the founders I think about the amendments. These amendments represented their core beliefs. When I think about that I look at society and think how well have the amendments been followed. We will write a custom essay sample on 2nd Amendment Paper or any similar topic only for you Order Now In a sense most of the amendments have been followed well, but in the last 20 or 30 years that has been declining rapidly. The 1st amendment, probably the easiest to follow is being silently fought. Now it may not be illegal to say something but by the time you say it you might have wished it was. People are beat to a bloody pulp because their opinion of the president, or even worse their favorite sports team. What has this nation come to when we beat a living person to a bloody pulp for the sports team that they like! I think we need to take a step back and look at ourselves for a second. The 2nd amendment is our first freedom. For the last 100 years people have slowly been trying to tax and regulate our right and freedom to bear arms. The 2nd amendment states that their should be a militia ready for times of war. It does not say an army, a militia. If I remember correctly the definition of militia is a military force raised by civilians to take place of an army in an emergency. Now how are we supposed to act like a military force, if the law abiding citizens of this country cannot buy a basic infantryman’s rifle. Yes you can buy a modified version, but we should be able to buy any type of firearm we would like, because it is our right and our freedom. This amendment isn’t about no duck hunting. It’s about the people’s right, freedom, and ability to protect themselves and their country. The 3rd amendment Is our freedom of religion. In this day and age christianity is frowned upon, at the time of our founders christianity represented the core belief system of almost every man, woman, and child. Nowadays you have atheists making it illegal to display any signs of religion, you want to put a nativity scene in front of your house, so sorry you probably need a permit for that, or its against your city ordnance. You want to have a christmas party at the local town/city green, no problem, only you need to call it a winter party, winter holiday party, or non denominational festive celebration, pretty insane. To make matters worse we have a president, a president the leader of a country whose motto is â€Å"IN GOD WE TRUST† is supporting the beliefs of Islam, a country who believes that America is satan. You know its bad when we have a muslim president. The constitution has been changed and twisted so much that I bet the founders are doing backflips in their graves. In a society were the sacred organization of marriage is being laughed at and challenged day to day, this isn’t just a political challenge its a virtue, and morality challenge as well. This country was founded on good, christian values and after the influence of God and the Holy Ghost. Christopher Columbus talks about a calm and spiritual feeling coming over him as he studied his maps and sailed on the open waters. There is no question that God had a hand in the founding of this country. At the time of Columbus, Asia had all the necessary means and resources to sail to the new world, and almost did. But Columbus did first and opened the path for God’s country, the light set on a hill. When this countries core belief system is attacked we must defend it, and if it fails we are in deep trouble. The day we take God out of everything is the day we are utterly and absolutely screwed. The founders knew that God must be at the center of our lives and that we must show Godlike attributes for this country to succeed, the amendments did a pretty good job of following the ten commandments if you think about it, for example the 2nd amendment may have something to do with those commandments that talk about coveting, and stealing? Although there are things wrong with America, and although it is painful to say there are a lot of things wrong but at then end of the day this is still the place, the Country chosen above all other countries to be an ensign unto all nations. To be the place where that great Lord Jesus the Christ will return again, where every knee shall bow and every tongue confess. Although we may be going through some rough times in America we must see the light at the end of the tunnel. When Thomas Jefferson said that there must be a separation of church and state I don’t think he realized what trouble he would cause years down the road. People now think that that statement means that we must take God out of all Politics and Government, the people who believe this are sadly and utterly WRONG. The statement that Thomas Jefferson made in a letter to a friend, not even in the Constitution, stated that we must not allow the Government control the Church, and not allow the Church to control the Government. We now see what happens when people take things out of context. This country is a beautiful one and still offers more than any other country in the world, but that is slowly decaying, and we are rapidly becoming more and more like, other countries in the world. We must return to the founders first dream, illustrated in the amendments and expressed in their letters and personal documents. We must not remove God from our lives, when we do we decay morally and spiritually and we as a society will slowly but surely spiral out of control. God still loves us and this country. He loves us no matter what, and though we may be going through a rough time in America’s history, it will all be for our profit and learning, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and boy it is a bright and glorious one. This is his country, he inspired Columbus in his studying to find this country. He inspired the founders, to go against the tight grip of England, and write a constitution and declare independence. He inspired the writers and signers of the declaration of independence, to defy a nation and become an even stronger nation, full of love, and freedom. Now in this our darkest time we abandon our God, yet we need to remember that he has not abandoned us. The founders knew that a day would come when the constitution would be challenged, now its up to us as a nation to defend their dream. We must not give up as a nation, or even as individuals, at the end of the day there is no collective salvation, we must teach our families and our children the correct way of living, a Godlike way of living. We must try first to show faith, hope and charity to ourselves, and then our family, before we can try it as a nation. That is what we need, faith, hope, and charity. That was what the founders wanted to tell us. We must show faith hope and charity. No free government hand-outs. How to cite 2nd Amendment Paper, Papers

Manchester United Essays - Sport In Manchester, Knights Bachelor

Manchester United Manchester United Football Club Club History Manchester United Football Club is one of the most successful clubs in Britain along with the likes of Liverpool, Rangers and Arsenal but in this paper I will take a look why United are simply just the best there is. The Birth Of A Legend It all started way back in the 1870's when a group of railway workers decided to form a football club to play in on the weekends. They called the team The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Football Club but in 1878 renamed themselves Newton Heath. In the early 1890's the Football League accepted their application to join the league and were placed in the First Division, as there was two divisions. They started indifferently as they lost their first game to Blackburn Rovers, the powerhouse of the 1890's, 4-3 but a week later they beat Wolverhampton 10-1 to notch up their first ever victory. This victory is still a club record. In 1894 the club moved to Bank Street in Clayton because they were facing major financial problems but John H. Davies, a brewery director, was persuaded to put some money into the club therefore becoming the chairman and a director at the club. He decided changes were needed so he board renamed the club Manchester United and changed the strips from green and gold halved shirts and dark green shorts to red shirts and white shorts. The club appointed their first ever manager in Ernest Mangall in 1903 and three years later United had pulled themselves out of the Second Division back into the First Division, but real success didn't come till 1907/08 when they won the First Division title for the very first time. A year later in 1908/09 the club then won it's first F.A. Cup. John H. Davies brought a plot of land near Lancashire Cricket Club in the mid 1900's and started to build a new stadium. Old Trafford opened in 1910 but Liverpool won the first game there 4-3. In 1910/11 United won their second First Division title and a year later picked up their second Charity Shield, after winning their first in 1908. The Indifferent 30's, 40's and 50's In 1934 came a vital clash in the history of this great club. They had to travel to Millwall and beat them to stay in the Second Division otherwise they would sink to the unthinkable depths of the Third Division North. They won 2-0 and just a season later won the Second Division title to win promotion back up to the First Division. In the mid 1940's World War II erupted therefore destroying Old Trafford so the club had to sign an agreement with arch rivals Manchester City to play at their home ground Maine Road. The board also appointed Matt Busby as new team manager, a move which was to change the club dramatically. He captured his first tile in 1951/52 as United became First Division champions, but Mr. Busby wasn't happy and he decided the team needed some new blood and he brang together a group of extremely talented youngsters which became known all around the world as ? The Busby Babes ?. In 1955/56 The Babes won the First Division championship and entered the European Cup, the biggest club competition in the world. They went out in the semi-finals, to eventual Real Madrid, but they retained the league title the following season so they could enter the competition again. They wouldn't entered the 1957/58 European Cup if they knew what was going to happen next. After losing to AC Milan in the semi-finals the team stopped off at Munich. On take off the plane crashed killing eight members of the team and fifteen members of the club, press and airline staff. One of the players killed in this crash was Duncan Edwards, a player who could play any position at anytime time. This was a great loss to United because at the time he was said to have been the best player in the world. A Time Of Rebuilding The late 1950's and early 1960's was a time of rebuilding for the team and by 1963 they had won back the F.A. Cup and 1964/65 was the first time they had won the league

Awakening Eyes essays

Awakening Eyes essays With few exceptions, our male dominated society has traditionally feared, repressed, and stymied the growth of women. As exemplified in history, man has always enjoyed a superior position. According to Genesis in the Old Testament, the fact that man was created first has led to the perception that man should rule. However, since woman was created from mans rib, there is a strong argument that woman was meant to work along side with man as an equal partner. As James Weldon Johnsons poem, Behold de Rib, clearly illustrates, if God had intended for woman to be dominated, then she would have been created from a bone in the foot, but he took de bone out of his side/ So dat places de woman beside us (qtd. in Wall 378). Still, men have continued to make women submissive to them while usurping their identities in the process: [s]elf-determination is a mark of adulthood for American males; for American females of the nineteenth and part of the twentieth century, self-determination was neither expected nor encouraged (Leder 104). However, not all women were intimidated by the stereotypical expectations imposed by the social norms of their era. Defying their traditional roles, Kate Chopin and Zora Neale Hurston wrote The Awakening and Their Eyes Were Watching God, respectively; in each work a woman reaches independence and freedom by overcoming male dominance in her relationships. Chopins protagonist, Edna, and Hurstons feminist, Janie, discover that through their radical attempt to be free...the struggle for freedom is not linear but dialectic; the price of change is doubleness, and out of contradiction emerges a new self-a self that is determined, dominant, and, most importantly, free (qtd. in Dyer 116). The first indications of emancipation are evidenced by Edna and Janies first marriages. Edna weds Leonce Pontellier, a Creole, to retaliate against h...

Though intended to be the US Navys latest design, the new battleships saw a return to some features that had not been incorporated since the earlier Kearsarge-class (USS Kearsarge and USS ). These included the mounting of 8-in. guns as a secondary armament and the placing of two 8-in. turrets on top of the vessels 12-in. turrets. Supporting the Virginia-class main battery of four 12 in. guns were eight 8-in., twelve 6-in., twelve 3-in., and twenty-four 1-pdr guns. In a change from previous classes of battleships, the new type utilized Krupp armor instead of the Harvey armor that had been placed on earlier vessels. Power for the Virginia-class came from twelve Babcock boilers which drove two vertical inverted triple expansion reciprocating steam engines. The lead ship of the class, USS Virginia (BB-13) was laid down at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company on May 21, 1902. Work on the hull proceeded over the next two years and on April 6, 1904, it slid down the ways with Gay Montague, daughter of Virginia Governor Andrew J. Montague, serving as sponsor. A further two years passed before work on Virginia ended. Commissioned on May 7, 1906, Captain Seaton Schroeder assumed command. The battleships design differed slightly from its subsequent sisters in that its two propellers turned inward rather than outward. This experimental configuration was intended to improve steering by increasing prop wash on the rudder. USS Virginia (BB-13) - Early Service: After fitting out, Virginia departed Norfolk for its shakedown cruise. This saw it operate in the Chesapeake Bay before steaming north for maneuvers near Long Island and Rhode Island. Following trials off Rockland, ME, Virginia anchored off Oyster Bay, NY on September 2 for an inspection by President Theodore Roosevelt. Taking coal at Bradford, RI, the battleship moved south to Cuba later in the month to protect American interests in Havana during a revolt against the regime of President T. Estrada Palma. Arriving on September 21, Virginia remained in Cuban waters for a month before returning to Norfolk. Moving north to New York, the battleship entered drydock to have its bottom painted. With the completion of this work, Virginia steamed south to Norfolk to receive a series of modifications. En route, the battleship sustained minor damage when it collided with the steamer Monroe. The accident occurred when the steamer was pulled towards Virginia by the inward action of the battleships propellers. Leaving the yard in February 1907, the battleship installed new fire control equipment at New York before joining the Atlantic Fleet at Guantanamo Bay. Conducting target practice with the fleet, Virginia then steamed north to Hampton Roads to take part in the Jamestown Exposition in April. The remainder of the year was spent conducting routine operations and maintenance on the East Coast. USS Virginia (BB-13) - Great White Fleet: In 1906, Roosevelt became increasingly concerned about the US Navys lack of strength in the Pacific due to the growing threat posed by Japan. To impress upon the Japanese that the United States could easily move its main battle fleet to the Pacific, he began planning a world cruise of the nations battleships. Designated the Great White Fleet, Virginia, still commanded by Schroeder, was assigned to the forces Second Division, First Squadron. This group also contained its sister ships USS Georgia (BB-15), USS (BB-16), and USS (BB-17). Leaving Hampton Roads on December 16, 1907, the fleet turned south making visits in Brazil before passing through the Straits of Magellan. Steaming north, the fleet, led by Rear Admiral Robley D. Evans, arrived at San Diego on April 14, 1908. Briefly stopping in California, Virginia and the rest of the fleet then transited the Pacific to Hawaii before reaching New Zealand and Australia in August. After taking part in elaborate and festive port calls, the fleet steamed north to the Philippines, Japan, and China. Completing visits in these countries, the American battleships crossed the Indian Ocean before passing through the Suez Canal and entering the Mediterranean. Here the fleet parted to show the flag in several ports. Sailing north, Virginia made a visit to Smyrna, Turkey before the fleet rendezvoused at Gibraltar. Crossing the Atlantic, the fleet arrived at Hampton Roads on February 22 where it was met by Roosevelt. Four days later, Virginia entered the yard at Norfolk for four months of repairs. USS Virginia (BB-13) - Later Operations: While at Norfolk, Virginia received a forward cage mast. Leaving the yard on June 26, the battleship spent the summer on the East Coast before departing for Brest, France and Gravesend, United Kingdom in November. Returning from this excursion it rejoined the Atlantic Fleet at Guantanamo Bay for winter maneuvers in the Caribbean. Undergoing repairs at Boston from April to May, 1910, Virginia had a second cage mast installed aft. The next three years saw the battleship continue to operate with the Atlantic Fleet. As tensions with Mexico increased, Virginia spent an increasing amount of time in the vicinity of Tampico and Veracruz. In May 1914, the battleship arrived at Veracruz to support the US occupation of the city. Remaining on this station until October, it then spent two years in routine duty on the East Coast. On March 20, 1916, Virginia entered reserve status at Boston Navy Yard and commenced a significant overhaul. Though still in the yard when the US entered World War I in April 1917, Virginia played an early role in the conflict when boarding parties from the battleship seized several German merchant ships that were in the Port of Boston. With the completion of the overhaul on August 27, the battleship departed for Port Jefferson, NY where it joined the 3rd Division, Battleship Force, Atlantic Fleet. Operating between Port Jefferson and Norfolk, Virginia served as a gunnery training ship for much of the next year. After a brief overhaul in the fall of 1918, it commenced duty as a convoy escort that October. Virginia was preparing for its second escort mission in early November when word arrived that the war was over. Converted to a temporary troopship, Virginia sailed on the first of five voyages to Europe to return American troops home in December. Completing these missions in June 1919, it was decommissioned at Boston the following year on August 13. Struck from the Navy List two years later, Virginia and New Jersey were transferred to the War Department August 6, 1923 for use as bombing targets. On September 5, Virginia was placed offshore near Cape Hatteras where it came under attack by Army Air Service Martin MB bombers. Struck by a 1,100 lb. bomb, the old battleship sunk a short time later. Selected Sources DANFS: USS Virginia (BB-13)NHHC: USS Virginia (BB-13)NavSource: USS Virginia (BB-13)

Responses - Term Paper Example Regardless of the academic level for which dissertations are required to be pursued, each unique writing experience gives the researcher ample opportunities to determine the rationale for the study through identification of the research questions and to discern the most appropriate methods to address the aim of the research. As disclosed, when findings have been appropriately deducted from the data collected and analyzed, the researcher would use cognitive skills to interpret the findings and provide implications for current and future research. As revealed in the published guide prepared by Owens (2010), â€Å"the discussion and conclusion sections are your opportunity connect your work with broader issues† (p. 52). The findings therefore link the theories to practical applications as validated by the research. These types of knowledge are different. The significance of information is mainly dependent on the ability that it has in having an impact on behavior, decision as well as the outcome. Information is insignificance if after having received it, â€Å"things remain unchanged† (WebFinance, Inc., 2012). The dissertation will reveal the relationship that exists among the existing information, newly gathered data and new knowledge obtained by the author. The author will use all the knowledge which has been attained from the modules, knowledge obtained from research, observation and experiences in exploring and expanding on the information which she will present through the dissertation. – Flora The relevance of discerning the appropriate quality of information was highlighted and deemed to be crucial in writing dissertations. Aside from noting that information sources from modules, research, observation and experiences, one was led to contend that the information gathering strategies proposed by Bruce (1992) should follow structured procedures that include: identifying the problem; identifying the search areas; planning the search activities;

Pro Life Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Pro Life - Essay Example It is rather known most commonly as the opposition to most abortion case; the support to new life. The major stated goal of the pro-life movement is to "restore legal protection to innocent human life" (Matthew, 2006). This includes the protection of the fetuses and embryos, those who are physically incapacitated that cannot tell their thoughts anymore, and people who are too weak. There are three kinds of people in the world: those who only watch things to happen, those who knows how to make things happen and those doesn't even know whatever it is that hit them. Today, the majority of the people of the world are those who sometimes cannot even be bothered with what's happening, and the one's who make up the first and the last category. In today's reality, it is very hard to establish a common goal and further, fight for it; as people also considers the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is believed that it is the direct killing of an innocent child, and by the term, it is also a kind of "murder" by same person who gave life to it. It is no longer just the issue of a woman's right to choose the number of children that she will bear.

Challenges to Indias Automobile Industry

Challenges to Indias Automobile Industry Industry Overview Since the first car rolled out on the streets of Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1898, the Automobile Industry of India has come a long way. During its early stages the auto industry was overlooked by the then Government and the policies were also not favorable. The liberalization policy and various tax reliefs by the Govt. of India in recent years has made remarkable impacts on Indian Automobile Industry. Indian auto industry, which is currently growing at the pace of around 18 % per annum, has become a hot destination for global auto players like Volvo, Genneral motors. The automotive industry is facing new and pressing challenges. Globalization, individualizations, digitalization and increasing competition are pressing the face of the industry. In addition, increasing safety requirements and voluntary environmental commitments by the automotive industry have also contributed to the changes ahead. Size is no longer a guarantee of success. Only those companies that find new ways to create value will prosper in the future. The purpose of this paper is to present a short overview of the automotive industry today and highlight challenges facing the industry. Based on this perspective, some strategic methodology which enabling them to transform themselves for the competition. Automobile Industry in India Automobile Industry in India has witnessed a tremendous growth in recent years and is all set to carry on the momentum in the foreseeable future. Indian automobile industry has come a long way since the first car ran on the streets of Bombay in 1898. Today, automobile sector in India is one of the key sectors of the economy in terms of the employment. Directly and indirectly it employs more than 10 million people and if we add the number of people employed in the auto-component and auto ancillary industry then the number goes even higher. The automobile industry comprises of heavy vehicles (trucks, buses, tempos, tractors); passenger cars; and two-wheelers. Heavy vehicles section is dominated by Tata-Telco, Ashok Leyland, Eicher Motors, Mahindra and Mahindra, and Bajaj. The major car manufacturers in India are Hindustan Motors, Maruti Udyog, Fiat India Private Ltd., Ford India Ltd., General Motors India Pvt. Ltd., Honda Siel Cars India Ltd., Hyundai Motors India Ltd., and Skoda India Private Ltd., Toyota Motors, Tata Motors etc. The dominant players in the two-wheeler sector are Hero Honda, Bajaj, TVS, Honda Motorcycle Scooter India (Pvt.) Ltd., Yamaha etc. In the initial years after independence Indian automobile industry was plagued by unfavourable government policies. All it had to offer in the passenger car segment was a 1940s Morris model called the Ambassador and a 1960s Suzuki-derived model called the Maruti 800. The automobile sector in India underwent a metamorphosis as a result of the liberalization policies initiated in the 1991. Measures such as relaxation of the foreign exchange and equity regulations, reduction of tariffs on imports, and refining the banking policies played a vital role in turning around the Indian automobile industry. Until the mid 1990s, the Indian auto sector consisted of just a handful of local companies. However, after the sector opened to foreign direct investment in 1996, global majors moved in. Automobile industry in India also received an unintended boost from stringent government auto emission regulations over the past few years. This ensured that vehicles produced in India conformed to the stand ards of the developed world. Indian automobile industry has matured in last few years and offers differentiated products for different segments of the society. It is currently making inroads into the rural middle class market after its inroads into the urban markets and rural rich. In the recent years Indian automobile sector has witnessed a slew of investments. India is on every major global automobile players radar. Indian automobile industry is also fast becoming an outsourcing hub for automobile companies worldwide, as indicated by the zooming automobile exports from the country. Today, Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, GM, Ford and Mitsubishi have set up their manufacturing bases in India. Due to rapid economic growth and higher disposable income it is believed that the success story of the Indian automobile industry is not going to end soon. Some of the major characteristics of Indian automobile sector are: Second largest two-wheeler market in the world. Fourth largest commercial vehicle market in the world. 11th largest passenger car market in the world Expected to become the worlds third largest automobile market by 2030, behind only China and the US. Some facts on Automobile industry in India: India has the fourth largest car market in the world India has the largest three wheeler market in India India is the second largest producer of two wheelers in the world India ranks fifth in the production of commercial vehicles. Hyundai Motors ranks second in car production in the world. Indian automobile industry; manufacturing cars, buses, three wheelers, two wheelers, commercial vehicles, heavy vehicles, provides employment to a large number of workforce. The abolition of licensed in 1991opened the doors for international automobile manufacturers. Some of the well-known players of Indian automobile industry include: Hindustan Motors, Maruti Udyog, Fiat India Private Ltd, Ford India Ltd., General Motors India Pvt Ltd, and Toyota Kirloskar Motor Ltd among others. The production of automobiles in India is mainly for the domestic customers. Cars with 79% of automobiles in India, dominate the automobile industry in India. The Challenge of Competitive Environment The most important question is how a company can remain competitive in the face of the turbulent transformations taking place in the automotive industry. The key to success lies in being focused, responsive, variable and resilient, which can be accomplished by converting to anon demand company. Adaptively to an ever-changing environment has become the core business demand, requiring problem-solving tools and methods to be identified, selected and implemented quickly. Focused, responsive, variable and resilient are different behaviors required to become more adaptable behaviors whose features correspond with the exigencies of the business objective. If you are hungry at lunch time, you will responsively take a break so that you can afterwards again focus on your work. The vitamins in the salad you had for lunch make you resilient against influenza. Thus you can variably adjust to different weather conditions on the way back home without catching a chill. Transforming this analogy to b usiness, a car manufacturer has seven major strategic levers to enable such adaptive behavior. Market Share Automobile industry of India can be broadly classified under passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, three wheelers and two wheelers, with two wheelers having a maximum market share of more than 75%. Automobile companies of India, Korea, Europe and Japan have a significant hold on the Indian market share. Tata Motors produces maximum numbers of mid and large size commercial vehicles, holding more that 60% of the market share. Motorcycles top the charts of two wheelers with Hero Honda being the key player. Bajaj by far is the number one manufacturer of three wheelers in India. Passenger vehicle section is major ruled by the car manufacturers capturing over 82% of the total market share. Maruti since long has been the biggest car manufacturer and holds more that 50% of the entire market. Major Manufacturers in Automobile Industry Maruti Udyog Ltd. General Motors India Ford India Ltd. Eicher Motors Bajaj Auto Daewoo Motors India Hero Motors Hindustan Motors Hyundai Motor India Ltd. Royal Enfield Motors Telco TVS Motors DC Designs Swaraj Mazda Ltd Government has liberalized the norms for foreign investment and import of technology and that appears to have benefited the automobile sector. The production of total vehicles increased from 4.2 million in 1998- 99 to 7.3 million in the2003-04. It is likely that the production of such vehicles will exceed 10 million in next couple of the months. The industry has adopted the global standards and this was manifested in the increasing exports of the sector. After a temporary slump during 1998- 99 and 1999-00, such exports registered robust growth rates of well over 50 per cent in 2002-03 and 2003-04 each to exceed two and- a-half times the export figure for 2001-02. The key factors behind the upswing Sales incentives, introduction of new models as well as variants coupled with easy availability of low cost finance with comfortable repayment options continued to drive demand and sales of automobiles during the first two quarters of the current year. The risk of an increase in the interest rates, the impact of delayed monsoons on rural demand, and increase in the costs of inputs such as steel are the key concerns for the players in the industry. As the players continue to introduce new models and variants, the competition may intensify further. The ability of the players to contain costs and focus on exports will be critical for the performance of their respective companies. Key Research Highlights Passenger car production in India is projected to cross three million units in 2014-15. Sales of passenger cars during 2008-09 to 2015-16 are expected to grow at a CAGR of around 10%. Export of passenger cars is anticipated to rise more than the domestic sales during 2008-09 to 2015-16. Motorcycle sales will perform positively in future, exceeding 10 Million units by 2012-13. Value of auto component exports is likely to attain a double digit figure in 2012-13. Turnover of the Indian auto component industry is forecasted to surpass US$ 50 Billion in 2014-15. Automobile Features Production volumes in automobile companies have grown by around 2% per year over the last 20 years; however, its relative importance in terms of market value compared to other industry sectors has decreased significantly. Today the automobile industry represents less than 2% of the total European market capitalisation, while 20 years ago the sector was almost double in relative size. As a result of tough competition, product cycles have become shorter which creates a crowded market place with newer and fresher products. This also means that 1) the competitive advantage period of a model, or technology, decreases, and 2) research development costs have to be covered more quickly. Recognising market movements first, or even creating them, is a key success factor for automobile companies. For example, early detection of the rising demand for hybrids was an important marketing move for Toyota, while other companies may be launching their hybrids when competition is already quite intense. Only about 1/4 of over 50 car manufacturers who were operating 40 years ago have been able to retain their economic independence. Despite this consolidation, overcapacity in the industry is a constant issue, keeping pricing and the return on invested capital under pressure when the cost of capital can often not be covered. A high fixed cost base ensures that companies follow a growth strategy. However, this does not mean more jobs in the sector, but rather that fewer employees in lower-cost countries have to produce more. Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicles India is the fifth largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles in the world. Performance of this sector during the last 4 years is given in the table below:- The main manufacturers are: Tata Group (engines in collaboration with Cummins) Ashok Leyland (in collaboration with IVECO, Italy Volvo India Pvt. Ltd. (wholly-owned subsidiary of Sweden Defence Vehicle factory (in collaboration with MAN, Germany Opportunities for Canadian companies in terms of exports, technology transfers, strategic alliances, financial collaborations and JVs CNG buses Modification of engines and supply of kits. Fuel cell technology for buses Bus body building including school bus bodies Heavy duty trailers Indian automobile sector A Booming Market De-licensing in 1991 has put the Indian automobile industry on a new growth track, attracting foreign auto giants to set up their production facilities in the country to take advantage of various benefits it offers. This took the Indian automobile production from 5.3 Million Units in 2001-02 to 10.8 Million Units in 2007-08. The other reasons attracting global auto manufacturers to India are the countrys large middle class population, growing earning power, strong technological capability and availability of trained manpower at competitive prices. In 2006-07, the Indian automotive industry provided direct employment to more than 300,000 people, exported auto component worth around US$ 2.87 Billion, and contributed 5% to the GDP. Due to this large contribution of the industry in the national economy, the Indian government lifted the requirement of forging joint ventures for foreign companies, which attracted global to the Indian market to establish their plants, resulting in heightened automobile production. Economic Problems The problems faced by Indian manufacturers are similar to those battering Indian carmakers excessive production capacity; a surging new competitor. And all of this is happening at a time when the industry is focused on a process of outsourcing components. In addition, moving plants to Asia has become a priority because of such factors as costs, flexibility and technology. Europe, in contrast, becomes a stumbling block [to manufacturers] because of its rigidities and the stagnating demand there. The automotive industry currently faces huge challenges. The fundamental technological paradigm it relies on, volume production, has become progressively more unprofitable in the face of increasingly segmented niche markets. At the same time it faces increasing regulatory and social pressures to improve both the sustainability of its products and methods of production. Building on a wealth of research, The automotive industry and the environment addresses those challenges and how they can be met in producing a sustainable and profitable industry for the future. Hybrid cars require companies to spend more on research. The Indian automakers committed themselves to hybrid motors from the very first moment, and they have taken the lead in the market as a result. Other manufacturers have entered this segment late, and they are now being forced to make a major disinvestment in this concept. Auto manufacturers are more worried about the environment, and that matters more and more to customers. As a result, they are dedicating more resources to investing in technology for adopting their vehicles. The Indian companies are the ones who have invested more in these devices for quite some time because of their culture of harmony with nature, and the measures imposed by the government. The Indian firms are gaining market share. Toyota, which does not face the same economic problems as its major rivals, hopes to oust from its spot as the worlds leading automaker. To do that, Toyota is going to invest 10.13 billion Euros over the next few years.Already; the Indian firm sells more vehicles in the Indian than any other manufacturer. On the one hand, its SUVs are losing market share. On the other hand, Ford is being affected by discount plans aimed at luring buyers. In addition to suffering high labor costs, it spends a great deal on healthcare and pensions for its workers. Finally, Ford is paying a price because Asian manufacturers are highly competitive. AUTOMOBILE TRENDS The industry is mature, especially in the European and American markets, while some Asian markets (e.g. China and India) still offer some growth. Overall, demand growth is likely to stay below the nominal GDP (Gross Domestic Product) expansion rate. Branding, technological leadership (especially in fuel efficient propulsion technologies and safety) and consequently differentiation, as well as good supplier relations will be the key success factors for the automobile company of the future. The regulatory focus on greenhouse gas emissions, as well as the increasingly tight regulations on air pollutants, is creating pressure for automakers to reduce fuel consumption, as well as emissions from internal combustion engines. The trend is moving towards developing drive trains based on new technologies such as hybrids and fuel cells. In all consumer markets, whether they are low-priced household goods, food, apparel, or cars, a clear polarization exists. On one side there are people who can afford to buy very expensive automobiles, while on the other, demand for low-cost vehicles is increasing. This trend can be expected to continue and car manufacturers have to ensure that they are not going to be lost in the middle. Finding Solutions In recent years, vehicle makers have gone from an environment in which the level of service and quality assured excellence while costs permitted them to guarantee profitability, to another environment that is more competitive and more global, and in which the business has become more complex. The problems faced by Tata Motors, the largest automobile company in India. In late January 2009, Tata Motors was reeling under a severe business and financial crisis. The company had acquired Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR) from the US-based Ford Motors for US$ 2.3 billion in June 2008. To finance the acquisition, Tata Motors raised a bridge loan of US$ 3 billion from a consortium of banks. By the end of January 2009, Tata Motors was yet to pay around US$ 2 billion towards the bridge loan. Moreover, JLR needed further investments, that too quickly, to keep the operations running. Besides this, the commercial launch of Tata Motors small car Nano required much more time than anticipated. Those vehicle makers must ally themselves with suppliers, and work as a team to find solutions that add value and profitability. That way, collaboration becomes a strategic option that companies can utilize to improve their competitiveness and guarantee their survival. They can conserve resources, share risks, obtain information, access complementary resources, reduce the cost of developing products and improve their technology capabilities. With the Indian economy showing no signs of revival soon, there seemed to be no immediate possibility of an increase in domestic demand. The Managing Director of the Tata Motors was left wondering if the worst was over for Tata Motors and what he should do to revive the companys performance. Issues  » Understand the impact of macroeconomic factors on the business.  » Analyze the recent developments in the global economy due to the ongoing sub-prime crisis and the resultant global financial turmoil.  » Study the effects of global economic slowdown and its impact on the global automobile industry.  » Critically analyze the problems faced by Tata Motors and suggest probable solutions. Conclusion Today tough challenges in automotive industry require finding in news ways to create value if they are to prosper to successfully adapt these lever companies will be able to respond to changes with focus, responsiveness, variability and resilience. Today, the world automobile industry accounts for 15 percent of the world gross domestic product and in future will continue to be one of the worlds most important economic sectors. Despite the significant inroads that the transport sector has made into the world export market during the last decade, the sectors share in total India exports is still lower than the relative share of world exports of transport products. Lastly, the rise of global and regional production networks calls for an efficient transport infrastructure to enable India to become integrated into the network. The global networks require rapid and Just-in-time movement of components of the final product to be able to exploit the available comparative advantages of different locations. If a country does not provide the minimum standards of transport infrastructure, it would be excluded from the participation in the network. In The UK A Brownfield Site Architecture Essay

Recently brownfield sites have become popular due to the serious lack in the figure of greenfield infinites on manus for development. This is more outstanding in the built up countries where the demand for residential and commercial belongings is elevated. In 2008 the UK set a mark for brownfield developments. 60 % of all new houses were to be built on brownfield sites. Records show that we have already exceeded that mark and with the rate that we are repossessing brownfield sites at present we should significantly raise that per centum over the coming decennary. The utilizations for brownfield sites are non restricted to residential and commercial edifices. They are frequently considered for renovation into unfastened infinites for diversion, forest and assorted other community related countries. Reclaiming brownfield sites is at the bosom of the UK Sustainable Development Strategy. This â€Å" Development Strategy † incorporates an extended aggregation of economic, societal and environmental aims. Brownfield renovation cleans up environmental wellness jeopardies and eyesores and in making so it promotes community growing and regeneration. Managed efficaciously as a sustainable renovation strategy, Brownfield sites provide low-cost lodging, promote economic growing through locally sourced stuffs fostering local concern ‘ and trades, protect local wildlife and supply environmentally safe countries for households to bask. Furthermore, renovation of brownfield sites can give an country a make-over and can assist direct a message to the vicinity bespeaking the importance of saving and recycling.2.0 Brownfield Land Redevelopment StepsNow that the land has been chosen for the proposed development, a big athleticss Centre within a little town in Scotland, it is of import to set up whether or non the Brownfield site in inquiry is suited for such a development. The proposed site will affect the destruction of an bing edifice. Therefore all planning Torahs must be adhered to and the local planning governments must be notified in composing sketching the purposes for the proposed site. This is of import as particular licenses are required to repossess Brownfield sites. There are a figure of trials and surveies that must be carried out in order to obtain the needed information to find the extent of the decontamination steps required to fix the site.2.1 Demolition and Recycling Existing Building On-SiteIn order to maximize the sustainability of the development it is of import to place, separate and extinguish all risky stuffs from the dismantled waste. Furthermore any recyclables such as masonry debris and other stuffs should be extracted from the destruction waste and can be used in the concrete / asphalt or paved countries around the site. This promotes sustainable development by lending to the authorities sustainability aims of prudent usage of natural resources and protection of the environment. Using low embodied edifice stuffs reduces the CO2 emanations during the building procedure and besides has a positive consequence on the cost of the full undertaking as less waste is sent to expensive landfill. There are a figure of companies within the UK that specialise in building and destruction waste recycling and disposal. These companies work closely with â€Å" Site Waste Management Plans † guaranting that merely risky stuffs are disposed of and everything recyclable is reused.2.2 Designation of Hazardous MaterialsA big figure of stuffs are involved in any physique, hence, when a edifice is being demolished it is of import to place these risky stuffs and dispose of them safely so that they do non go a danger to anybody else in the hereafter. The edifice on the proposed site is a 150 twelvemonth old derelict masonry edifice. The bing edifice is to be demolished and any suited recyclables are to be used in building the new athleticss Centre and any concrete / asphalt or paved countries around the site. In order to place the assorted stuffs it is of import to set a sorting program in topographic point. This will guarantee merely reclaimable stuffs get reused and all risky stuffs are disposed of suitably. The history of the edifice plays a cardinal portion in the types of risky stuffs that can be expected to be found within the edifice. From the period the edifice was built a appropriately qualified professional can reason that the edifice shell itself will lend assorted risky stuffs to the list for safe disposal. These are likely to include asbestos, insularity stuffs, froths incorporating CFC ‘s ( Chlorofluorocarbons ) that are harmful to the O-Zone bed, roofing felts and bitumen. An applied scientist will besides look into the infinite within the edifice to find what risky stuffs may hold been associated with the assorted utilizations of the edifice. The derelict edifice in inquiry was originally used as a fabric mill and subsequently a furniture mill. This would bespeak that risky stuffs such as varnishes, gums, sealers, resin-based floorings and wood treated with chemicals or preservatives may be present from that period of the edifices life-time. In recent decennaries the edifice was used as a truck fix store. This might propose that there may be some taint from oil or lubricators, crude oil and any spillage from auto / truck batteries. It is really of import to prove for the presence of these substances and more as placing the presence of risky stuff is the first measure to decontaminating the site.2.3 Further ProbeFollowing probe into the edifice to be demolished, trials must be carried out on the status of the dirt around the site. It is of import to observe that all Brownfield site renovations come manus in manus with rigorous environmental issues. As a consequence it is recommended that an suitably experient environmental adviser is used. The environmental adviser will hold background cognition of Brownfield developments and will adequately look into any environmental hazards. First they will set about a desk top reappraisal of the proposed site by garnering all historical information available. This may associate to former quarrying or landfill in the country. Second they will fix an environmental assessment study. Contained within this study will be the consequences from extended proving for risky compounds within the dirt, land H2O and surface H2O. If the findings of the study are positive and support renovation on the site, the following measure is redress and riddance of risky stuffs.2.4 Remediation / Elimination of Hazardous MaterialsNow that the assorted risky stuffs have been identified, it is clip to categorise and split them so that they can be safely disposed of. This is what ‘s known as redress. The destruction of the edifice itself should be the concluding measure when uncluttering the site. Initially the edifice should be stripped down with careful consideration given to how each stuff is classed and whether it can be recycled or disposed of. This includes all loose stuff, fixtures, adjustments, Windowss, doors, warming and electrical systems and roofing. Once this has been categorized and divided all that should be left is the edifice skeleton and foundations for safe destruction Up until a few old ages ago redress of Brownfield sites was an expensive procedure. However, recent new redress engineerings have emerged and are cheaper than the more traditional methods. They include:Bioremediation – This utilises the natural procedures of autochthonal bacteriums, micro-organisms, workss, enzymes and Fungis to destruct or neutralize toxins and contaminations.Phytoremediation – This procedure uses workss. The can hive away contaminations in their foliages and roots ( bioaccumulation ) . Some contaminations such as heavy metals can be harvested and mined for reuse ( phytomining ) .In-situ Chemical Oxidation – This procedure injects O or chemical oxidizers into the contaminated dirt or H2O to destruct harmful compounds.2.5 Recycling Masonry RubbleWith a undertaking like this there is serious demand for concrete / asphalt and pavings around the development. Fortunately with the destruction of the bing derelict masonry edifice, a batch of the demand s can be met utilizing recycled masonry debris from the bing edifice. When utilizing recycled masonry debris from destructions such as this it is of import to guarantee that the debris is free from contaminations. Once this is done, the debris is so graded into sums. This is a simple procedure that involves sieve like machines that vibrate, dividing the assorted sized sums and roll uping them with aggregative stuff of similar sizes. The sums can so be used in assorted locations around the site depending on their size and categorization. It is of import to observe that the quality of recycled masonry rubble meets the demand for usage in building roads. Strenuous proving and categorising is required on the sums that are intended for concrete usage within the edifice in order to guarantee the consistence is sufficient. Lightweight sum does non run into demands for usage as a secondary concrete sum as the bulk of masonry stuffs are excessively soft and will adversely impact the strength of concrete merchandises.2.6 Access Roads and PavementsThe bing edifice will hold a figure of entree roads already in topographic point. These roads will hold to be excavated and in maintaining with the sustainable design of the proposed edifice and usage of recycle stuffs in the new physique it is merely suiting that the excavated asphalt should besides be recycled and form portion of the new entree roads and pavings around the site. The industry of asphalt it a really energy expensive procedure as the stuffs involved must be heated to really high temperatures in order to blend together. Therefore, the usage of recycled asphalt for route toppings around the site will hold a cost benefit to the undertaking every bit good as a positive impact on the environment.3.0 Proposed Sports Centre ComplexThe proposed athleticss Centre will be built utilizing low embodied, recycled stuffs where possible paying peculiar attending to the energy public presentation of the edifice. The edifice design will take inactive solar warming into consideration with cleverly positioned Windowss and landscaping throughout the site supplying equal shelter from the elements during the winter months. Sourcing stuffs locally cuts down on conveyance costs over big distances. This automatically reduces C emanations and besides supports the local industry guaranting occupations and community growing. This will be a cardinal constituent in the sustainable edifice of the proposed athleticss Centre.3.1 FoundationsThe best foundation for the proposed athleticss Centre is a raft foundation. Due to the size and graduated table of the proposed physique a raft foundation will let the weight of the edifice to be transferred to the land over a greater country and besides provide a degree surface for which to construct upon. It is of import that there is equal steel support in the concrete to battle land motion. When the recycled masonry debris is graded into sums, some of these sums will be suited for usage in the concrete raft foundation. Recycled concrete sums can replace up to 20 % of virgin sum in concrete within the commissariats set out in BS 8500-2.3.2 Structural Framing / Building SkeletonThe most efficient manner to construct the proposed athleticss Centre edifice is utilizing a steel framed building. The steel construction would run into the spacial demands of the chief athleticss hall, high ceilings with long spans and column free infinite to suit an indoor football pitch or hoops tribunal. Recycled steel would be appropriate here as steel can be used infinite times with no negative affects to its strength or public presentation.3.3 Wall Build-UpOnce the foundations and steel construction are in topographic point it is clip to believe about the external wall construct up. Given the intended usage of the athleticss hall it is of import to utilize a stuff that will non merely be su stainable in its building and difficult erosion but besides have an acoustic quality as the noise generated within the athleticss hall when it ‘s occupied will be of an elevated nature and could interrupt the environing populace. There is a broad array of merchandises available such as concrete blocks with 50 % coarse sums replaced with plastic while still supplying equal strenght but all things considered, I would propose an aerated concrete block. These are among the most environmentally friendly edifice merchandises available. They are formed from recycled stuffs. One of which is Pulverised Fuel Ash ( PFA ) , this is an ineluctable byproduct of the coal-burning power coevals procedure which is usually stockpiled in immense unsightly hills or is dumped at sea. Further heightening the sustainability of this merchandise is the fact that no stuff goes to blow, anything left over when a batch is made automatically goes into the following mix. Besides due to the lightweight of the stuff, more can be loaded onto a individual lorry cut downing the CO2 emanations produced in conveyance and rushing up building. The pit should be 100mm partly filled with natural wool insularity or a similar sanctioned natural insularity or recycled insularity system. The external face of the edifice should be clad with recycled bricks tied back to the internal foliage with acoustically approved wall ties.3.4 Floor Build-UpEach country of the athleticss Centre will necessitate a different finish depending on the proposed usage. The response for case will necessitate to supply a warm and welcoming atmosphere, this can be achieved utilizing rug. Recycled rug is available, this is formed from recycled stuff such as plastic, wool, cotton or nylon and laid on a recycled gum elastic carpet pad. The gum elastic could be derived from any scrap Surs staying on the site from the truck fix store. The changing suites will necessitate a difficult floor which is imperviable to H2O. Many green options are available such as recycled ceramic floor tiles and eco-friendly gum elastic floor tiles. A survey should be undertaken of the concern ‘ in the country in order to make up one's mind which stuff is easiest to obtain with the chase of sustainability in head. If there is a prey nearby it might be an thought to look into rock as a possible stuff for the flooring in difficult have oning countries. Stone has a natural, dateless beauty and a feeling of solid quality which is difficult to fit with any other type of stuff. Unfortunately due to the costs associated with rock it may non be a plausible stuff as it is by no means the cheapest type of shocking to put in or keep. The flooring in the athleticss hall is a specific type of shocking stuff. It has a figure of functional demands associated with it. It must be lasting, smooth and somewhat soft to forestall serious hurt. An ideal surface therefore, would be a gum elastic based surface which can be formed from any bit tyres found on the site. This is a cost good procedure as it is a sustainable usage for the waste gum elastic intending it is non necessary to pay for the safe disposal of the fresh Surs. The recycled gum elastic surface should so sit on some stiff insularity such as woodwool, mineral./rock wool or expanded or extruded polystyrene to increase the thermic public presentation.3.5 Roof ConstructionFor the proposed athletics Centre I would propose a green roof. A ‘Green Roof ‘ is a roof that has a vegetated covering planted over a waterproofing membrane. The roof consists of assorted beds, each with its ain map. The assorted beds cater for drainage, wet, root protection and filte ring. Green roofs have many benefits over traditional or conventional roofs. They offer a longer roof life span, increased acoustic public presentation, improved thermic public presentation in the winter and heat shielding in the summer and as they are populating organisms they retain and store 90 % of rain and storm H2O and return it to the ambiance by agencies of vaporization.3.6 Energy Performance of the BuildingA cardinal characteristic of this edifice is the inordinate usage of recycled and sustainable stuffs in the building. This has a positive consequence on the environment guaranting minimum CO2 emanations are generated in the industry of the stuffs. This is an admirable pattern and it sends a clear message to developers that the usage of recyclables can hold good executions for both the undertaking budget and besides the environment. It is of import to keep this aim throughout the edifices life-time. This can be done by implementing micro renewable engineerings during the building procedure. A edifice of this graduated table is frequently associated with big energy measures. With the monetary values of oil escalating and the UK ‘s dependence on fossil fuels at a extremum, it is critical that this edifice incorporates as many micro renewable engineerings as possible in order to drive the running costs down to a manageable degree. I would strongly propose the usage of solar photovoltaic cells ( PV ) and wind turbines to bring forth electricity along with wood fuelled boilers ( biomass ) connected to a cardinal warming system as the most relevant micro coevals engineerings that a edifice of this nature could profit from.4.0 Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems4.1 Introduction to SudsSustainable urban drainage systems are a new environmentally friendly manner of covering with surface H2O run-off. Traditional drainage strategies lead to deluging, cause pollution and are by and large more expensive to put in. Surface H2O no longer has the chance to soak into the land, alternatively it is collected in a web of pipes along with any contaminations such as oil, solid affair or toxic metals it may pick up along the manner and it is discharged into the nearest rivers or watercourses. Sustainable urban drainage systems replicate natural drainage methods. Water run-off is collected and stored to let natural cleansing to happen prior to infiltration or controlled release to watercourses. As a consequence they prevent pollution, control implosion therapy, recharge land H2O in the natural H2O tabular array and heighten the environment. There are for chief design options. These are:Filter Strips and SwalesFilter Drains and Permeable SurfacesInfiltration DevicessBasins and PondsIt is of import to observe that depending on the needed public presentation of the sustainable urban drainage system, a combination of two or more design options may necessitate to be incorporated in order to accomplish a suited drainage solution.4.2 Filter Strips and SwalesFilter strips and swales are vegetated surface characteristics that drain H2O equally off impermeable countries. Swales are long shallow channels whilst filter strips are gently inclining countries of land.4.3 Filter Drains and Permeable SurfacesFilter drains and permeable surfaces are devices that have a volume of permeable stuff below land to hive away surface H2O. Water run-off flows to a storage country via a permeable surface such as gravelled paving countries or solid pavement blocks with spreads between the single units. When the H2O falls it passes through the surfa ce to the permeable fill in the filter drain. This so allows the storage, intervention, conveyance and infiltration of the H2O ensuing in clean uncontaminated H2O being returned to land.4.4 Infiltration DevicessInfiltration devices drain H2O straight into the land. They may be used either at beginning or instead the overflow can be conveyed in a pipe or swale to the infiltration country. They include soakaways, infiltration trenches and infiltration basins every bit good as swales, filter drains and pools. Infiltration devices can be integrated into and organize portion of the landscaped countries.4.5 Basins and PondsBasins and pools store H2O at the land surface, either as impermanent implosion therapy of dry basins and inundation fields, or lasting pools. These constructions can be designed to pull off H2O measure and quality.4.6 Benefits of Sustainable Urban Drainage SystemsThere are a figure of benefits to put ining a sustainable drainage system as opposed to a traditional / con ventional system. For illustration the cost of linking to ramp cloacas and public drains is avoided and care is simple and inexpensive. Care can be carried out by landscaping contractors without the demand of skilled applied scientists and heavy machinery. When clean filtrated H2O is distributed back to the site it gives the natural flora a opportunity to boom and can make a really pleasant environment for everyone to bask.4.7 Proposed Sustainable Urban Drainage SystemA athleticss Centre will necessitate a figure of difficult surfaces to provide for auto parking. I would propose utilizing solid pavement blocks for the surface in the auto parking countries. A spread must be left between each block leting H2O to filtrate through to an under the surface storage drain which runs to a designated country such as a vegetated or green country. This rainfall run-off safeguard must be implemented in the initial design phase. I would besides propose soak holes / soakaways around the site to filtrate any H2O collected in downpipes around the edifice. With the current clime that we live in it has to be expected that significant rain will fall each twelvemonth. As such, a well designed sustainable drainage system can understate implosion therapy and any incommodiousness that may be caused during times of high rain autumn.5.0 DecisionThe purpose of the brief for this study was to critically analyse and measure the possibilities of renovation on a brownfield site with the destruction of an bing derelict masonry industrial edifice and the building of a new athleticss Centre using as many of the recycled stuffs from the destruction as possible. I approached this undertaking somewhat blind with my basic cognition of brownfield renovation. After researching the subject further I discovered all the environmental benefits environing brownfield renovation. With the worsening handiness of greenfield sites and the turning demand for lodging and community growing, brownfield renovation has got to be at the top of the list where possible in order to continue what natural countries are left. Furthermore edifice on brownfield sites removes unsightly and frequently unsafe creaky edifices and gives local countries a opportunity to renew and make a new image. Decontaminating brownfield sites in a specialized undertaking but the remotion of risky stuffs makes it a safer environment for all concerned. Fortunately new techniques for redress of contaminated sites have made it cheaper. This can be appetising for possible developers looking to spread out their belongings portfolio and as a consequence it can hold a knock on consequence within a community bring forthing occupations and concern for local trade. The brief stated that stuffs from the destruction of the bing masonry industrial edifice must be recycled and used in the building of the new athletics Centre. When the list of stuffs that could be recycled in the bing edifice was broken down, it was found that about everything could lend in some manner to the new physique. This impacts on the budget for the undertaking and in maintaining with the UK ‘s C emanation decrease marks later cuts down on any CO2 emanations that would hold been produced in the industry of virgin stuff. The usage of micro-technologies would suit in good with the overall thought of a athleticss Centre as in my sentiment a athleticss Centre implies wellness and wellbeing which can be related back to the footings â€Å" clean † and â€Å" green energy † associated with these methods and the environment. The execution of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems permits the safe return of clean irrigated H2O back to the dirt. The benefits of cost and minimum care entirely speak for themselves. With four chief design options available I feel it is of import to include at least one system as a drainage solution on sites such as this within little towns in order to continue the local wildlife and let flora to boom free from H2O pollution. All in all I feel that this undertaking were it to be undertake would be really executable. Most of the costs for would come from decontaminating the site. The physique itself would turn out to be cheaper with recycled stuffs already available on-site and given the nature of the proposed athleticss Centre I would non anticipate any issues with the local community as it will supply a safe location for kids and grownups likewise to hang out. The sustainable nature of the proposed physique besides indicates that this edifice is encompassing programs to travel frontward into a greener hereafter and it may put a case in point for future green development within the country.6.0 MentionsBrown, G. , ( 24th September 2007 ) .
